Why I chose Direct Primary Care: The Doctor-Patient Relationship

Doctor-Patient Relationship

Before going to medical school, I was working as a medical assistant at a family practice office with Dr B. He was a mentor to me in so many ways. One of the things I appreciated was the doctor-patient relationship that he had built with his patients. He always spent a little extra time with each one. Many of the older patients in the practice would dress up in their Sunday best to come to the doctor’s office. They wanted to look their finest for him. It was always great around the holidays when his desk was piled high with homemade gifts from his patients. Jams, pastries, and handmade decorations. As a family physician, you follow your patients throughout their lives and that’s one of the many reasons why I wanted to go into the field.

Unfortunately, in this day and age we are always in a hurry. Rushing out the door, eating on the go, having our attention diverted after only a few seconds. It happens in the medical field as well. With double and triple-booked schedules doctors just don’t have the time to spend with their patients. Most primary care doctors are only spending on average 7-8 minutes with each patient. Not nearly enough time to even address more than one chief complaint, let alone enough time to get to know where the patient comes from, what they like to do and who they really are!

Direct primary care has allowed us to re-establish that all-important doctor-patient relationship. Cutting out the middle-man and opening up communication, which is key in any relationship. As a patient you can call, text, email your doctor personally anytime and even come in same day for an office visit. And best of all, we are able to spend 45 minutes to an hour with our patients at each appointment. Actual quality time to better address all of your concerns. We are your advocate and a partner in the life-long journey of better health. The way it used to be before we became too busy to be the doctors we always dreamed of becoming.
